• Topics Covered: Linguistic definition of Jihad (greater vs. lesser); rules of engagement in Islamic warfare (prohibition of harming civilians, trees, and places of worship); historical context of early Muslim defensive battles.The definition and sources of Sharia (Quran and Sunnah); the five higher objectives of Sharia (preservation of life, intellect, faith, lineage, and wealth); how it applies to daily individual life.

• Course Objectives: To contextualize historical Islamic conflicts and accurately define the multi-layered concept of Jihad. To explain Sharia as a living ethical system aimed at public welfare and individual spiritual growth.

• Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to explain the core objectives of Sharia and recognize its heavy focus on ethical personal conduct and social justice. Students will understand the defensive nature of early Islamic warfare and differentiate mainstream Islamic rules of war from modern extremist actions.

• Tools & Materials: Abu Bakr’s historic ten commands to his army (primary text), academic articles on just war theory. Explanatory slides on the Maqasid al-Sharia (Objectives of Sharia), case studies on ethical Islamic finance.
